7 Effective Steps to Get Rid of Dust Mites – Prevent Allergy and Asthma Attacks

By Jim Rees

Dust Mites are a particularly potent trigger for allergic reactions and asthma attacks. This brief article provides a number of steps which when followed will provide an extremely effective means to get rid of dust mites and prevent allergy and asthma attacks, especially at night, when sufferers are most vulnerable.

Of every room in the home, the bedroom is the place where we are most susceptible to attack from that uninvited and most unwelcome “guest”. They are found everywhere, but thrive in the dark, warm, humid environment that our beds and mattresses in particular, provide.

They feast on the millions of dead skin cells that we shed each night and produce allergen-rich feces. This is the actual trigger for an asthma attack.

Unfortunately, getting rid of dust mites is not an easy task and once you have achieved how do you prevent them simply returning and re-infesting your bed?

The following is probably the most effective course of action that you can take to eliminate the problem:

1.) Firstly you should employ the services of a professional cleaning company which specializes in mattress cleaning. They will remove all dust mites and associated detritus from your mattress and leave it virtually sterile.

2.) All other bedding should be washed at high temperature (at least 130 – 140°F).

3.) Encase your mattress and pillows with specially designed protective covers that prevent even the smallest creatures from passing through them.

4.) Installing air purifiers with special HEPA filters will effectively remove dust and dust mites from the atmosphere.

5.) De-humidifiers set to control relative humidity at about 50% or below will discourage dust mites, which favour humid environments.

6.) Keeping the bedroom clean by regularly vacuuming is obviously important but using equipment with a specialized (HEPA) filter is essential.

7.) Replace wall-to-wall carpets in bedrooms with bare flooring e.g. tiles or wood.

Taking as many of the above steps as possible will prove effective in eliminating the dust mite problem and the investment in time and money, required, will be more than compensated for by the relief that it will bring.

Combat asthma and allergy attacks by eliminating dust mites completely. As you can see, it is possible to get rid of dust mites, but once that has been achieved, you must take positive action, to prevent them from simply returning and re-infesting your bed.
