Bed Sheet – Does it Do a Body Good?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Bed sheets seem to be the latest fad. Remember when we all just loved those soft, white cotton beds sheets that mom used to tuck into our bed at night? You know, until we were as snug as a bug-in-a-rug? Ah, yes, now you remember yesteryear.

As little ones, we had no idea what 300, or even 800 thread count meant! We just knew that they sure smelled good after hanging on the line all day.

Bed sheets however are an important part of getting a good night sleep, much more than we previously thought. Have you ever washed the sheets and didn’t have an extra pair and had to temporarily sleep on a bare mattress? Think back to your first apartment. Didn’t sleeping on that bare mattress feel uncomfortable?

The lining between you and the mattress creates a comfort that allows you to fall asleep much quicker than if there were none. The more bed sheet thread counts the better your sleep will be. Threads counts of 100 or less are just like sleeping on a mattress with no sheets. You will often find this kind of sheet in cheap motels. Not that I know too much about that. And moving on…

What I do know about is the 500 to 800 thread count sheets that you will find in 5 star hotels that pride themselves on comfort and excellence. You know the ones that like to leave fresh baked cookies on your pillow at night?

You don’t have to wait until you are traveling to have the 5-star experience. You can have that experience at home every night. Shop at the higher end department stores to find the bed sheets with the higher quality thread to get the comfort you are looking for. In addition, a store specializing in bed and linens is a good place to look. There are many click and mortar stores that provide these higher end sheets at a discount. Be sure to read the label, as we have discussed all sheets are not made equal.

Once you find the sheets of your desire, it is important to give them the proper care. Be sure to change the linen on your bed at a minimum once a week. Body oils and grime come off of our bodies daily onto our sheets, even when our bodies are clean.

Nothing will keep you awake more than sleeping on dirty, smelly sheets. I hear you – that is gross. Even if it is your first apartment and money is a little tight, it is a good idea to have more than one set of sheets. That way if one pair is dirty, you can use the extra pair of sheets until you have time to wash that huge pile of laundry that you are dreading.
